Dweezil Zappa

For his first album of his own material in ten years, Dweezil Zappa has applied much of what he has learned from performing his dad’s music over those years. The result is a record that often sounds a bit Frank Zappa-ish, but with Dweezil’s own pop and metal influences thrown into the mix. The opening track, “Funky 15,” sounds the most like the elder Zappa’s music, with its angular instrumental texture and irregular rhythms. Speaking of Father Zappa, the track “Dragon Master,” a send-up of heavy metal, is the only song Dweezil and Frank ever wrote together; its over-the-top heavy metal screams and shredding guitar, not to mention the stereotypical metal lyrics (“Satan is the dragon master, bringer of untold disaster!!”), make it an entertaining collaboration.
