Leif Vollebekk – North Americana (2013)

As the stories on North Americana are revealed, you can’t help but hear moments of Dylan or younger Ryan Adams, but Leif is forging his own legacy not just extending someone else’s. We constantly hunt for timeless records, holding tight to the hope that collections of lost songs will be found in attics and basements. Vollebekk renews our faith that these songs are still to be written. He shares the same broken heart and empty bottles as his icons – dressed in appropriate attire (sad piano, harmonica, gentle strums, and tape hiss) – but his compositions surge and sway in inventive ways.
These songs are bold and noisy when needed. The scratches and nicks Leif and his trusted friends left in tact are as important to the final product as the beautiful, smooth strokes that took years to finish. Leif reminds us that while looking back can be comforting, it’s the future that deserves our focused stare.
