Shear/Shazar – Shear/Shazar (2013)

Posted by on May 3, 2013 with No Commentsas

SHEJules Shear and Pal Shazar live in Woodstock, New York. Jules has written and recorded 13 solo albums plus had his songs recorded by many including Cyndi Lauper (All Through The Night) and The Bangles (If She Knew What She Wants). Pal has released 8 solo records. Never in all their years of writing and recording did they consider making a record together. Til now. This album is such a great surprise, a wonderful collaborative effort between Jules Shear and Pal Shazar. What immediately stood out to me is how well crafted the songwriting is. That’s not altogether surprising since both Jules and Pal have always been great wordsmiths and songwriters. But this album brings their writing and singing to a new level of craftsmanship through their collaboration. The lyrics, music and singing are constructed so well, and Jules and Pal execute them perfectly. I’ve been a huge fan since the first Jules & the Polar Bears album. There’s an understated quality here that brings out how strong these songs are, both lyrically and musically. Many of the songs address relationships, marriage and commitment from an adult perspective and you get the sense that Jules and Pal are really singing to each other, not just with each other. Musically the songs are filled with interesting changes and great arrangements.

David Serby – I Just Don’t Go Home (2006)

Posted by on May 3, 2013 with No Commentsas

California — principally from Bakersfield and south – has long bred roots rockers who favor a lean, but muscular approach. It’s a line that zig-zags from Richie Valens to Buck Owens to X to Dwight Yoakam. David Serby continues this fine tradition. In fact, his debut disc suggests what the Blasters might have liked if […]

Emmylou Harris – Elite Hotel (1975)

Posted by on May 3, 2013 with No Commentsas

Released in December 1975, just a few months after PIECES OF THE SKY, Emmylou Harris’s ELITE HOTEL is already a first achievement in her career. Twelve songs, twelve little musical pearls. One would never repeat enough that half of the success of a singer depends on the members of the band playing in the recording. […]

The Brains – The Monster Within (2013)

Posted by on May 3, 2013 with No Commentsas

The Brains continue to blur the lines between rockabilly, psycho, punk and rock n’ roll; kicking down genre barriers and demanding undying loyalty at every show they play. Incorporating elements from whatever the hell they feel like, The Brains concoct an irresistible brew of Motorhead-esque ferocity and sexed up Latin swagger while adding a pinch […]
