Drive By Truckers – Gangstabilly (1998)

The Drive By Truckers have released three great rock albums in Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day and The Dirty South but they didn’t start out like that. Gangstabilly is their first album and the sound is completely different from the three aforementioned “rawk” classics. Here we are listening to a band which is more than a little bit country, they even have banjos and lots of pedal steel. The songwriting, however, is still great. The Truckers songs always tell a story and the lyrics and subject matter are never trite or cliched. The best songs on this album are “The Living Bubba” about a musician defying AIDS, the tale of folly and loss that is “Panties in your Purse”, the joyous “18 Wheels of Love” – who else would write that chorus, “Steve McQueen” and the country-punk of “Buttholeville”
