Sophie Zelmani – Soul (2011)

This Stockholm born singer has with the sparsest means entranced her  admirers with music that reaches far under the skin – to a place where each breath can resound with the  power of an earthquake. To make the quiet intense is something that Sophie and long time producer Lars Halapi have made their signature sound.“Soul” was recorded in Skåne in the South of Sweden and mixed by Ronnie Lahti at Medley Studios in  Copenhagen. The result is a proud and soul-filled album.”All about you” is nearly eight minutes long, “My soul remembers” is just over nine. They could have been even longer. On his ninth album plays Sophie Zelmani, and the sidekick Lars Halapi, so reclining gently that she sounds like a completely different artist than the one who broke through in the mid 90’s with “Always You”. No one can play as quietly and dreamily as Zelmani, few can sound as contained sad. Kings of Convenience acoustic milestone “Quiet is the new load” sounds like an excited techno flat in comparison.

Paul Simon – Graceland [25th Anniversary Remastered Edition] (2011)

Posted by Zorn on November 30, 2011 with No Commentsas

This remastered edition include a demo version of “Homeless,” an alternate version of “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” and an early version of “All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints.” Graceland features an eclectic mixture of musical styles including pop, a cappella, isicathamiya, rock, and mbaqanga. Much of the album was recorded in South Africa, and it features many South African musicians and groups. Simon faced accusations that he had broken the cultural boycott imposed by the rest of the world against the apartheid regime in South Africa, which was in its final years at the time. This view was not supported by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee, as the album showcased the talents of the black South African musicians while offering no support to the South African government. The worldwide success of the album introduced some of the musicians, especially the vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to global audiences of their own.

A peace Ebony himself and his band clearly not grants. Slum Dreams Bering end of 2010 received much praise. Comparisons with John Mellencamp, Ryan Adams, Nick Drake and others singing songs written and demigods were reviewed. A fine blend of folk, blues and country, although many references calls, but enough Ebony own show. And that is […]

Howe Gelb’s revolving-door band Giant Sand started out as a gritty twang-rock project for the beer-and-barbecue set. Still steeped in desert mystery, Gelb’s wise and wizardly ways have evolved over the past 15 years to the point where his songs manage to conjure up images of Neil Young, Brian Wilson, and Tom Waits comingling inside […]

Jorma Kaukonen’s first solo album remains one of the crowning achievements in his distinguished musical career. First released in 1974, Quah drew on the same folk and blues influences that powered his Hot Tuna project, but did so with a gentler, more delicate touch. Produced by his Hot Tuna partner Jack Casady, the album mostly […]

NRBQ – Peek-A-Boo: Best of 1969-89 (1990)

NRBQ have been one of America’s great rock & roll bands since they emerged in the late Sixties, but given their checkered recording career — nothing approaching a hit, several short stays at major labels and a longer tenure at their own Red Rooster imprint — and a sense of creative wanderlust that strains the […]

honeyhoney – Billy Jack (2011)

Posted by Zorn on November 21, 2011 with No Commentsas

Fine-tuning the blend of country and coffeehouse Americana that filled their 2008 debut, honeyhoney present themselves as a leaner, twangier band on this pitch-perfect follow-up. Trading licks on the banjo, acoustic guitar, and violin, bandmates Suzanne Santo and Benjamin Jaffe set themselves up as a more commercial Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, keeping the tempos […]
