Spin Doctors – If The River Was Whiskey (2013)
The Spin Doctors, one of the little alt-rock bands to break out big in the early ’90s, are back with a new album and tour. If the River Was Whiskey, set for release April 30, is described in a press release as the blues album the band was always meant to make. Lead singer Chris Barron elaborates, calling the collection of 10 original tunes a ramshackle, broken carriage running down a cobblestone hill, with pots and pans, and a screaming baby. –USA Today
Pharis & Jason Romero – Long Gone Out West Blues (2013)
The influence of Joni Mitchell surfaces on “The Little Things Are Hardest in the End” – possibly the album’s hardest hitting tune – followed by hints of Dylan and Baez, and other more elusive influences. A spirit emerges, clearly plucked from deep within obscure field recordings. From Pharis’ thoughtful, creative originals to classics like “Sally Goodin”, you might be hard pressed to determine what’s old and what’s new.
Billy Bragg – Tooth & Nail (2013)
Billy Bragg releases his first new studio album in five years. Tooth & Nail was recorded over a whirlwind five-day session with Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry (whose impeccable production credits include Solomon Burke, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint) in his South Pasadena studio. Working with a small band of musicians whose talents had recently appeared on records by the likes of Bon Iver, Lana del Rey and Regina Spektor, the performances have a wonderfully spontaneous feel. The results are, according to Billy, a return to the rootsy sound of 1998’s Mermaid Avenue sessions he recorded with Wilco – drawing on soul, country and folk music influences to explore the ups and downs of relationships that have stood the test of time.
