The Coal Porters – Find the One (2012)

Posted by on October 19, 2012 with No Commentsas

Find The One is the sixth album from ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin’s stellar new act the Coal Porters, one which shows the Coal Porters expanding their palette as they take acoustic folk and bluegrass into previously uncharted waters. Find The One features (take deep breath) five new Sid Songs, an astonishing campfire cover of David Bowie’s classic Heroes, a guest appearance by ex-Fairport Convention guitarist Richard Thompson, a two-part instrumental collaboration from the band’s virtuosos: fiddler Carly Frey and banjo man John Breese, as well as the first ever appearance of BBC radio legend Brian Matthew on an alt-country recording! To say nothing of a sitar and fiddle battle on the Rolling Stones’ immortal Paint It, Black.Produced by the legendary John Wood, the man who recorded Fairport Convention in their glory days and who produced Nick Drake, Squeeze and Beth Orton, Find The One was recorded in north London earlier this year. It was mixed by Ed Stasium in Colorado, Ed being best known as Phil Spector’s main engineer and for his work with the Ramones. Stasium mastered it, too, so it is the best sounding Coal Porters recording ever done.

Jason Karaban – Shift (2012)

Excellent record from start to finish. There’s a little bit of everything in here (from singer/songwriter vibe to alt/pop to americana) but still this feels like one cohesive body of work. Superior song writing and a wonderfully melodic voice make this an easy listen…. And there are lots of guest appearances on here from notable artists…. Highly recommend.

V A – She Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool – A Tribute to Barbara Mandrell (2006)

Posted by on October 19, 2012 with No Commentsas

Barbara Mandrell hit her commercial peak in the early 1980s, when her only serious rival as the queen of country-pop crossover was Olivia Newton-John. With her TV variety series, glitzy stage show, and commercial success, some questioned whether Mandrell was country at all, though she reasserted her loyalty when she recorded “I Was Country When […]

While Caitlin Cary’s solo albums have made it abundantly clear she can make splendid music by her lonesome, there’s no arguing that she collaborates very well indeed, as her work with Whiskeytown and Tres Chicas has proven. For Begonias, Cary teamed up with another gifted singer/songwriter, her friend Thad Cockrell, and the two mesh beautifully […]
